Mayor Jean Stothert should give up any thought of ending the tax on food service establishments.
The eating place operator who suggested the tax because of a desire to discourage eating at competitors’ establishments is now dead. And the tax has now been in effect five years without any complaints and no noticeable effect on the sales at restaurants.
In a recent interview, the mayor indicted she still didn’t like the tax but found it is needed as a source of revenue in the city budget.
Stop saying you still oppose the tax and concede that it has become an important source of city revenue and get on with more important issues.
The mayor is doing a good job and I wish her well as she faces continuing problems like the pension demands of police and fire unions.
